The Department of Building Inspections reviews and approves all applications for building permits as governed by the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC). The USBC outlines the building compliance regulations for constructing new buildings and adding to existing buildings.

The Department of Building Inspections also ensures compliance with Virginia’s erosion and sediment control requirements to help prevent destruction of property and natural resources caused by soil erosion, sedimentation, and non-agricultural run-off before and throughout the construction process.
